Managing Environmental Risk

Hazardous Wastes

The handling of hazardous wastes is regulated in Canada by municipal, provincial, federal and international initiatives. The following projects carried out for Environment Canada illustrate EHS’ expertise in this area

Hazardous Waste Classification Guide

A comprehensive document was prepared that assembled all information required to determine whether or not a waste is hazardous in the context of the Export and Import of Hazardous Waste (EIHW) Regulations.

CEPA-Toxics in Waste

EHS was contracted to evaluate which waste types imported to or exported from Canada may contain CEPA toxic substances. A toxicological profile of 45 substances was compiled and information gathered on which industries use the substance, how the substance could enter waste streams, the nature of the waste, and which waste types may contain the substance.

Destruction of Hazardous Waste

EHS carried out several projects assessing technologies for the destruction of ozone depleting substances (ODS) and identifying facilities both in Canada and internationally that destroy ODS.  Many other hazardous materials, including Persistent Organic Pollutants (ODS), could be destroyed by these technologies or in these facilities.
